Hot, dry and gloriously clear — the classic coastal season, with calm seas and the finest underwater visibility of the year. It coincides with festive and school holidays, so the best villas book far ahead; we hold them early. Perfect for pairing with a green-season safari.
Jun – OctWarm, dry & breezy
The long dry season is lovely on the coast too — warm days, cooling ocean breezes and fewer crowds, dovetailing beautifully with the Mara’s migration months for a bush-and-beach trip. Diving is good, if occasionally breezier than mid-summer.
Apr – MayThe long rains
The quietest, greenest and most humid months, with heavier rain and rougher seas; some coastal properties close and dive visibility drops. There are still fine-weather windows and excellent value — we’ll advise honestly whether the timing suits.
Any monthWarm water, year-round
The Indian Ocean here is warm all year, and the coast is a genuine year-round escape. The “best” time depends on whether diving clarity, festive sun or quiet value matters most — and on the safari you’re pairing it with. We plan the two together.

A short private flight — around one to one-and-a-half hours — carries you from your last safari airstrip, or from Nairobi, direct to Diani, Lamu or Malindi. No backtracking; the beach simply follows the bush.

If time allows, almost always. After the early mornings and drama of a safari, a few days on the ocean is the perfect way to relax and let it all sink in — and a short private flight makes the transition effortless. It’s the classic bush-and-beach journey.
How many nights should I spend on the coast?
Three to five nights is ideal — long enough to truly unwind without the trip feeling top-heavy. Couples and honeymooners often stay longer; a short two-to-three-night add-on still works beautifully after a longer safari.
Which part of the coast is best — Diani, Lamu or Watamu?
