Bespoke Luxury & Private Safaris in Kenya | Select Safaris

The journeys — 01°17′S · 36°49′E

Every Select safari is bespoke.

There is no catalogue to choose from. We begin with you — your dates, your pace, how private you want it — and design the whole of your time in Kenya around it. What follows is how those journeys take shape: the ways to travel, how long to give them, and what is quietly handled on your behalf.

What a VIP safari means

More than an expensive room.

A VIP safari is not a grander version of a luxury holiday. It is a different kind of arrangement altogether — one built around privacy, access, time and discretion as much as comfort.

Luxury describes the room. VIP describes the whole experience around it: the aircraft that saves you a day of driving, the conservancy where the land is yours to explore off-road and after dark, the guide chosen for you rather than assigned, the single person who answers at any hour, and the quiet handling of everything you would rather not think about. A beautiful lodge is the beginning of that, never the whole of it.

The words below are often used interchangeably. They are not the same thing, and knowing the difference is the first step in designing the right journey.

How VIP compares to luxury, private, tailor-made and exclusive-use safaris
The termWhat it actually meansBest for
VIP safariThe complete package — privacy, expert guiding, private logistics, discretion and security, arranged end to end by one team. Those for whom time, privacy and seamlessness matter as much as luxury.
Luxury safariDescribes the standard of the accommodation and comfort — fine lodges, excellent food. Says nothing about privacy or logistics.Travellers who want comfort but are content to share camps and guides.
Private safariYour own vehicle, guide and schedule — you travel as a party of one. May still use shared camps.Anyone wanting to set their own pace without strangers in the vehicle.
Tailor-made / bespokeThe itinerary is designed from scratch for you rather than sold off a shelf. This is how every Select journey begins.Everyone — it is the method, not a tier.
Exclusive-useAn entire camp, house or villa reserved for your party alone — no other guests at all.Families, groups, celebrations and anyone needing total privacy.

In short: a Select safari is always bespoke and private; it is luxury as a matter of course; and it becomes exclusive-use whenever you wish. Full detail on sole-occupancy camps lives on the Exclusive-Use & Buyouts page.

The ways to travel

Organised three ways — by air & road, by occasion, and by the shape of the journey.

Rather than a long menu of near-identical trips, our journeys differ along three real axes. Most safaris combine one from each — a private flying safari (mode), for a honeymoon (occasion), built as a bush-and-beach journey (shape).

How long to travel

How many days does a Kenya safari need?

The honest answer: give each camp at least three nights, and never try to see everything at once. A rushed safari is the one mistake money can’t undo. As a guide:

LengthThe journeyWhat it coversSuits
1 dayNairobi in a dayNairobi National Park, the Sheldrick elephants, Giraffe Manor.Layovers & business add-ons
2–3 nightsA first tasteA single region — often a Masai Mara fly-in.Long weekends, post-conference
4–5 nightsThe essentialsOne or two complementary regions.First-time safari travellers
7 nightsThe classicTwo or three regions, linked by air.The most-chosen length
10 nightsThe consideredThree regions, unhurried, with room for a coast finish. Those who dislike rushing
14 nightsThe grand tourThe full spread of ecosystems, bush and beach.Connoisseurs & multigen families
21+ nightsEast AfricaKenya with Tanzania or Rwanda’s gorillas.Once-in-a-lifetime journeys

On pacing: flying between camps buys you time and comfort; road travel rewards those who love the country in between. We plan rest days into longer trips, keep three nights as the minimum per camp, and would rather show you two regions beautifully than four in a blur. Private aviation also lets us build a safari around a jet schedule or slot one between meetings — see flying vs road and how to plan.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

What’s the difference between a VIP safari and a luxury safari?
Luxury describes the standard of your accommodation and comfort. VIP describes the whole experience around it — privacy, expert guiding, private aviation and transfers, discretion, security and a single team handling everything end to end. A Select journey is luxurious as a matter of course, but its real value is in what you never have to arrange or worry about.
Is every itinerary really designed from scratch?
Yes. There is no fixed catalogue. We start from your dates, party, interests and pace, and build the journey around them — which regions, which camps, how you move between them, and how much of the world you’d like to leave behind. “Bespoke” is our method, not an upgrade.
What does “exclusive-use” mean, and can I book an entire camp?
Exclusive-use means an entire camp, lodge or private house is reserved for your party alone, with no other guests. It’s popular with families, groups, celebrations and anyone wanting complete privacy. Full detail is on the Exclusive-Use & Buyouts page, and there’s a practical guide to booking a whole camp.
How many days do I need?
Give each camp at least three nights, and don’t try to see everything. Two to three nights suits a single-region escape; seven nights is the classic length across two or three regions; ten to fourteen nights allows an unhurried grand tour with a coast finish. See the durations table above and our full planning guide.
Do we travel fully privately, or with other guests?
Every Select journey is private — your own vehicle, guide and schedule. Whether you also stay in exclusive-use camps (no other guests at all) is your choice, and we’ll advise where it’s worth it.
Can you combine Kenya with Tanzania or Rwanda’s gorillas?
Yes. The Mara and the Serengeti pair naturally into one cross-border journey, and Rwanda’s mountain gorillas make a superb extension. Both are arranged on request as part of an extended tour.
What’s included as standard?
A dedicated travel designer and single point of contact, 24-hour in-country support, a private vehicle and senior guide, private-aviation coordination, priority airport assistance, luggage handling, celebration and dietary personalisation, and security and medical contingency as needed. See the full list above and The Experience.
Are wildlife sightings guaranteed?
No honest operator can promise wild animals will appear on cue — and we won’t. What we can do is stack the odds heavily in your favour: the right regions in the right season, senior guides who read the land, private conservancies with room to search off-road and after dark, and the time to let the wilderness reveal itself. It nearly always does.
How far ahead should we book?
The best camps and exclusive-use properties sell out months ahead, especially over the migration and festive season. Six to twelve months is comfortable; we can sometimes arrange far sooner. More in our guide on how far ahead to book.
Can you accommodate children, security teams, accessibility or dietary needs?
Yes to all. We arrange child-friendly guides and villas, coordinate close protection and your own security personnel, plan for mobility and medical requirements, and personalise every menu — including halal, kosher, vegan and allergy needs. Tell us at the enquiry stage so we can plan properly.
