Why a private family safari

The holiday that becomes a memory forever.

A safari is the rare holiday that thrills every generation at once — the four-year-old spotting her first elephant, the teenager behind a camera, the grandparents watching it all unfold. The secret to making it effortless is travelling privately: your own vehicle and guide, so drives can be as long or as short as small legs allow, mealtimes flex around naps, and no one else’s schedule ever intrudes.

We choose camps and villas built for families — space, pools, interconnecting rooms, and guides who know how to turn a game drive into an adventure — or take a whole camp exclusively so children can simply be children. Every detail, from car seats to childcare to a birthday surprise on the plains, is arranged before you arrive.

Wonder, at every age

Guides who make it magic for children

The right guide changes everything for a family. Ours are chosen for their patience and warmth as much as their expertise — teaching young trackers to read the dust, running junior-ranger adventures, keeping teenagers spellbound, and knowing exactly when a drive should turn for home and a swim.

Behind them, a team that quietly handles the rest: child-friendly menus, flexible meals, babysitting when parents want an evening, and shorter, well-timed drives so no one tires. The wild, made joyful and easy for all of you.

Questions, answered

Booking your family safari.

How much does a family safari cost, and what about children?
As a guide, family journeys start from around US$1,450 per adult per day, with sample packages from US$5,900 per adult for four nights. Children are charged from half the adult rate, and under-fives are often free. A family taking a villa or whole camp exclusively can be excellent value. We confirm a firm family quote before you commit. See the cost guide.
What is the minimum age for a safari?
Many shared camps set a minimum age (often 6 or 8), but because we travel privately — your own vehicle and guide — we can arrange wonderful safaris for much younger children, and even toddlers, at the right family camps. We match camps to your children’s ages.
Is a safari safe for children, and what about malaria?
Yes — with the right planning. Camps are secure and staff attentive, private guiding keeps things calm and controlled, and we advise on malaria precautions, including low-risk and malaria-free options such as parts of Laikipia if you prefer. See planning a safari with children.
What do children actually do all day?
Far more than sit in a vehicle: junior-ranger programmes, tracking and bush skills, cultural visits, swimming, night-sky astronomy, and photography for older ones — with drives kept flexible and well-timed so no one tires. Guides are chosen for their way with children.
Which camps and regions are best for families?
Laikipia is a family favourite for its riding, rhino and space; the Mara for big cats and easy game viewing; and the coast to finish. We choose family villas and interconnecting rooms, or a whole-camp buyout for larger groups. See Laikipia and bush & beach.
Can you look after a big multigenerational group?
Absolutely — it’s one of our specialities. Gentle pacing for grandparents, thrills for teenagers, care for little ones, and often a whole camp taken exclusively so everyone gathers together. See exclusive-use & buyouts.
