At Giraffe Manor, a herd of endangered Rothschild’s giraffes wanders the lawns of a 1930s manor house — and joins you for breakfast, poking their heads through the windows for a treat. We usually recommend an arrival night in Nairobi — it lets you shed the long flight, adjust, and begin the bush rested rather than frazzled. A night at the end is lovely too, for a final dinner and any last shopping before the flight home. Even a few hours can hold a game drive.

What can I do on a Nairobi layover?
A great deal. A daytime layover is enough for a private game drive in Nairobi National Park or a visit to the Sheldrick elephant orphanage, with luggage handled and you back at the airport unhurried. We turn dead time between flights into a highlight of the trip.
Is there really a national park in the city?
Yes — Nairobi is the only capital in the world with a national park on its doorstep. Lion, rhino, giraffe, buffalo and zebra roam open plains with the skyline behind them, a short drive from the city’s hotels.
Can I visit Giraffe Manor and the Sheldrick elephants privately?
Yes. Giraffe Manor’s rooms are famously few and booked far ahead, but we secure them; and we arrange private or out-of-hours visits to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and the Giraffe Centre for a calm, uncrowded experience.
How does the JKIA to Wilson transfer work, and how long does it take?
International flights arrive at JKIA; almost all bush flights depart from Wilson Airport across the city. The distance is short but Nairobi’s traffic can be heavy, so we time the transfer carefully — or lift you over it by helicopter when connections are tight. See the JKIA to Wilson guide.
Should I spend a night in Nairobi before flying to the bush?
We usually recommend it. An arrival night lets you recover from the long flight and start the safari rested; it also protects your onward connection against any international delay. Even so, if time is tight we can fly you straight on.
Where should I stay in Nairobi?
It depends on your taste and timing: a landmark city hotel for dining and business, a leafy Karen or Langata retreat near the park and Sheldrick, Giraffe Manor for the giraffes, or a well-placed airport option for very early flights. We match the stay to your plans.
