What defines it

Two very different Kenyas, in one journey.

The wildlife of the plains and the peace of the Indian Ocean aren’t a compromise. Together, they’re the whole story.

A safari is exhilarating — early starts, big skies, the pulse of a river crossing. The Kenyan coast is the other half of the sentence: warm turquoise water, a dhow at sunset, and days measured only by the tide. Put them together and you have a journey that gives you both the adventure and the exhale, without ever leaving the country.

The art is in the joins. We time your internal flights so no day is lost to transfers, choose safari camps and beachfront hotels that belong to the same standard, and hand the whole thing to a single team so that wheels-down on the coast feels like the same trip, not a second one you had to arrange yourself.

And we’re honest about the balance. Roughly half and half is the classic shape, but the right split depends on who’s travelling — a family with young children, a honeymoon, a first safari. We’ll tell you what we’d do, then build it around you. Explore the Kenya Coast to see where the beach half can lead.

One honest note on the coast. Safari camps run on full board; beach stays usually don’t. Most coastal hotels and villas are booked on a breakfast or half-board basis, so some lunches and dinners are your own — a small trade for far more freedom to explore. It’s all set out plainly in your quote.

About these prices. Figures are indicative, per person sharing, in low-to-shoulder season, and cover the elements listed. They’re a guide to help you plan — a firm, all-inclusive quote is confirmed in writing before anything is committed. Peak safari dates and private-island stays raise the figure; green season lowers it.

Good to know

Bush & beach questions

How much does a bush and beach safari in Kenya cost?
Indicative pricing starts at around US$1,450 per person, per day — a little below a pure safari, because coast nights cost less than remote camps. Sample journeys run from about US$6,900 for five nights, US$12,500 for eight, and US$19,500 for a twelve-night grand tour — all per person sharing, in low-to-shoulder season. These are planning guides; a firm all-inclusive quote is confirmed before you commit. See our guide to what a VIP Kenya safari costs.
How does the bush-to-beach transfer actually work?
By air, and seamlessly. You’ll fly from your safari airstrip back through Nairobi (or, on some routes, direct) and on to the coast — with all connections, the short Wilson-to-JKIA hop and check-ins handled by one team, so it feels like a single journey rather than two trips stitched together. See how we fly you on private flying safaris.
How should I split my time between bush and beach?
Roughly half and half is the classic shape, but it depends on you. Families and honeymooners often lean a little longer on the beach; keen wildlife travellers give the bush the extra night. Tell us who’s travelling and we’ll recommend a balance — and time the safari half to the migration or calving where it matters.
When is the best time for a bush and beach safari?
The happy overlap is Jul–Oct and Dec–Mar, when the bush is at its best and the coast is warm and dry. We’d avoid the long rains of April–May at the coast in particular. See our month-by-month seasons guide to fine-tune the timing.
Is it a good choice for families and honeymoons?
It’s one of the best. The variety keeps children engaged — wildlife one week, a beach to run wild on the next — and for honeymooners it pairs the shared adventure with a barefoot celebration. See our family safaris and honeymoon safaris.
Where on the Kenya coast do you go?
Diani’s long white beaches, Watamu and its marine park, laid-back Kilifi, the timeless Lamu Archipelago, and a handful of private islands and villas. We match the stretch of coast to your trip — see the Kenya Coast for the full picture.
Are the beach stays all-inclusive like the safari camps?
Usually not, and we’re upfront about it. Safari camps run on full board; most beach hotels and villas are booked on a breakfast or half-board basis, leaving some meals to your own choosing — which many travellers prefer at the coast. It’s all itemised in your quote so there are no surprises.
