Why by helicopter

No road. No airstrip. No limits.

A helicopter changes what is possible on safari. It lifts you over the roadless north to the black lava of the Suguta Valley and the jade shore of Lake Turkana; it sets you down on a river sandbar for a champagne breakfast, or beside a crater lake no vehicle will ever reach.

Where a fixed-wing aircraft connects airstrips, a helicopter goes anywhere — low and slow over the herds, high past the glaciers of Mount Kenya, then down wherever the moment calls for it. It is the ultimate expression of a private safari: total freedom of the map, and scenes that only a handful of travellers will ever witness.

The country from above

Landscapes only the few will see

From the cockpit, Kenya reveals itself whole: the Great Rift falling away beneath you, flamingo-pink soda lakes, the folds of the Matthews Range, the shifting dunes of the Chalbi. Then the machine settles onto a ridge or a sandbar, the rotor stills, and the silence of a place no one else can reach closes in around you.

Every hour is flown by senior pilots with vetted operators, and coordinated by your travel designer as part of a seamless whole — whether a single showstopping day or a week-long expedition.

Questions, answered

Booking your helicopter safari.

How much does a helicopter safari cost?
A full day’s private flying starts from around US$6,500 per helicopter (up to three guests), and multi-night expeditions from about US$2,900 per person per day — for example US$16,500 per person for a four-night northern expedition. Because helicopters are charged by the aircraft and the flying hour, the exact figure depends on hours flown, aircraft and party. We confirm an all-in quote before you commit. See the cost guide.
Is it priced per person or per helicopter?
Both, depending on the journey. Day excursions are priced per helicopter (typically up to three guests as standard, more with a larger aircraft), which makes them excellent value for a family or small group. Multi-night expeditions are quoted per person, two sharing, with the helicopter dedicated to your party.
How many people can fly, and what about luggage?
Standard aircraft carry up to three or four guests plus the pilot; larger machines take five. Weight matters more than volume, so we advise soft bags and confirm limits with your aircraft — the team handles the details.
Can I add a helicopter day to another safari?
Absolutely, and many guests do — a single spectacular day of flying from a Laikipia or Mara base, then back to camp by evening. It slots neatly into a private flying safari or any itinerary.
What happens if the weather turns?
Safety always comes first. Our pilots make the call, and we build weather contingency and flexible timing into every plan so a day can shift rather than be lost. It’s part of why we use only experienced operators who know this terrain.
How far ahead should I book?
Helicopters and the finest remote camps are limited, so the deep-north expeditions in particular book well ahead — six to twelve months is ideal, though a heli-day can sometimes be added at shorter notice. Start your enquiry →
